The holidays are a major time for house guests, but I’ve never been one to host people for overnight stays. Growing up, there was always just someone else in the family who lived nearby and had much more space for our family members from other countries to stay with.
I recently moved into a one-bedroom apartment with my partner. It’s a petite space so I didn’t expect to end up hosting not one, but guests for a two-night stay, this year—especially with the apartment being nowhere near fully decorated.
While two nights may seem like a brief stay, my apartment is very petite and I’ve never had this dilemma before, so I immediately got to work on the best ways to make my guests (and, honestly, myself) feel comfortable while they visited—here’s what I did.
A Complete Deep Clean
Other people’s mess is always grosser than your own mess, so I did a complete deep spotless of every nook and cranny. It helped to imagine that they would show up with white gloves and inspect for dust (they didn’t), so I really got to work with everything that needed to be tidied.
My partner and I split the cleaning evenly, with him focusing on our living room-kitchen-dining room combo area, while I put most of my attention towards our bathroom, entryway, and eventually our bedroom.
Splitting the work in half made the task much easier, and I was grateful to not have to worry about my guests noticing crumbs on the kitchen counter or a stain on our entryway mat.
All of this cleaning also happened a week before my partner and I would be going on vacation, so we also got laundry out of the way while we were at it. I paid particular attention to the workout clothes—I was determined to keep sweaty scents away from our guests.
Replenishing Our Snacks
I’ve grown used to a two-person (and kitty) household, so we normally have just the right amount of snacks stocked to last us until our next grocery run. We’d let our snacks dwindle more than usual because, with a vacation just over the horizon, we didn’t want anything to expire while we’re away.
A quick trip to the grocery store solved this problem, and I restocked every snack in the apartment (and got some extra things, per my guests’ request) to make sure they wouldn’t have to ask for anything, or go to the grocery store themselves.
Prepping Extra Toiletries
When getting the apartment in order, I kept asking myself “what would I want if I were a guest?” Making sure the bathroom was equipped with everything they’d need (and feel comfortable with using) was very vital—because who wants an awkward bathroom-related situation?
Before they arrived, I made sure my bathroom was equipped with spare body and hand towels, a brand-new air freshener, a fresh pack of sanitary products, and a body wash that was sheltered for communal employ.
I even cleaned and prepped a nail clipper just in case—you really never know what someone might need!
Setting Up a Great Rest Space
Privacy is a major concern for me whenever I’m on a trip, so I wanted my guests to feel like they had a space of their own while staying with us.
Unfortunately, that meant sacrificing my living room (it’s a one-bedroom apartment, and I wasn’t giving up my room). I prepped a queen-sized air mattress for them with all the sheets and blankets they’d need to keep toasty during our New York winter. I kept my time in the living room very brief and steered clear of their personal items so they wouldn’t feel like I was encroaching on their (very restricted) amount of space during their two-night stay.
I wanted to make sure my guests felt like I’d thought of everything to make them comfortable. Outside of having to share my Wifi password, I was able to minimize lots of pet peeve questions with the snacks, toiletries, and private space issues addressed. The stay was brief and my guests felt cared for and, in the end, that’s all that really mattered.
