Creators have been sharing their decked out “rest corners” on TikTok and Instagram as a spot to unwind, relax, and melt away the day.
Often, they’re outfitted in plush armchairs, a sultry blanket, and other comforting trinkets. Some exploit it to lay back and play video games, while others snuggle up and craft.
While many trends come and go, this is one we can see sticking around—after all, rest never goes out of style. Curious about how to make one of your own?
We tapped two interior designers for their pro tips on how to set up the perfect rest corner, from choosing the best furnishings to curating a soothing ambiance, and more.
Why Rest Corners are Trending
We live in a world where we are constantly stimulated—through phones, advertisements, and endless streams of content.
“That’s why cozy corners have become more than just a trend—they’re a necessity,” Amy Courtney, founder of Amy Courtney Design explains. “This trend will last because it aligns perfectly with the wellness movement, encouraging us to take a step back and find balance in our lives.
Hang Dang, founder and principal designer of Very Handsome Studio, agrees that the trend is born more out of necessity than a fleeting aesthetic.
“I’m thrilled to see many youthful content creators bringing this concept into the spotlight, making it more accessible and inspiring others to create their own restful havens at home,” Dang elaborates. “Given our increasing awareness of mental wellness and the need for self-care, I do believe this trend has the potential to endure.”
How to Set Up a Rest Corner
In terms of actually creating a rest corner, the starting point and end goal should ultimately be comfort, Dang says.
“Selecting the right furniture that is both functional and ergonomic is crucial. Consider how your body needs to be positioned to truly relax,” she explains. “For some, a reclining chair with feet firmly on the ground is perfect, while others may prefer a piece that allows them to fully lounge or sink in, offering a sense of security and restfulness.”
This could look like a bean bag, plush cushions, a sink-in-worthy armchair, or even a blanket on the floor, depending on your preferences, Courtney notes.
Dang also recommends a tiny side table to place your cup of tea or gadgets, as well as a good airy fixture to define the space.
The location of the rest corner is key, as well.
“Find a peaceful place in your home where you can minimize distractions,” Courtney suggests. “And don’t forget a cordial no cell phone sign as a reminder to disconnect! Stepping away from screens helps clear your mind, fostering creativity and improving focus.”
How to Set the Ambiance
There’s a lot more that goes into rest corners than just the layout. It’s about setting the ambiance and creating a full-sensory experience. In terms of materials, Dang recommends opting for tender picks like woven fabrics, velvet, microfiber, or chenille for seating.
“These materials offer comfort without overwhelming the senses,” she says. “Keeping textures and patterns minimal helps maintain a tranquil atmosphere, which is key for relaxation.”
As for colors, neutral yet sultry tones, along with earthy shades, are ideal.
“They are effortless on the eyes, soothing for the mind, and instantly create a cozy vibe,” Dang says. Think: airy hues of rust, green, and blues, says Courtney.
The right lighting is, of course, key to setting a serene mood as well.
“2700k lighting temperature is most similar to candlelight,” Courtney notes. Dimmable features on lamps are helpful to further establish that sultry, soothing glow.
Scent is another powerful tool to promote relaxation.
“Using an oil diffuser can enhance the atmosphere. For a refreshing lift, peppermint or eucalyptus works well. For a calming effect, lavender or marjoram are excellent choices,” Dang says. “If you’re drawn to earthy [scents], burning wood or incense sticks can also add a comforting aroma.”
The final puzzle piece? A custom touch.
“Personalize [the corner] by adding things that inspire you—favorite books, art, or items that make you feel relaxed and elated.”
How to Design a Rest Corner for Fall
A lot of rest corners online are geared toward summer. So, to acclimate the trend for fall, Courtney recommends layering in textiles.
“Add in thicker materials and deeper tones of earthy colors,” she says. “Maybe even a heated blanket to feel extra cozy!”
Some elementary trade-ins can go a long way, too.
“Consider swapping out cooler-toned furniture or accessories for warmer hues to reflect the seasonal change, creating a more inviting atmosphere as the temperature drops,” Dang recommends.
