I’ll Never Put a TV in My Apartment — Here’s What I Apply Instead (and You Should Too)

It might be a bit “novel age” of me, and I do admit I am a part of the younger generation, but I don’t see the point in having a TV. Of course I still watch TV, but unless you’re still streaming cable () I don’t understand why everyone wouldn’t just have a projector instead.

No Empty Space

Aesthetically, TVs have always confused me. When they’re not on, they’re just a massive black hole of squandered potential. If they are on, you’re circumscribed to what your chosen console considers a nice background: dolphins, aerial views of mountains, and picturesque blobs. Or, you have the daunting feat of finding both a musical queue and their corresponding videos that are both appropriate and an addition to the setting.

With a projector, you can decorate your wall exactly to your liking and still have a screen for entertainment.

Additionally, having a projector allows you to display chic images, videos, or aesthetic colors onto your already stylish wall decor while playing music. By using your computer as its primary mind, a projector is as powerful as the computer behind it, and those are pretty powerful these days.

Screen Alternatives

If you don’t want to go through the trouble of setting up a screen, you can always throw a blank sheet on the wall and in less than five minutes you’re set to stream.

If you want to watch TV in the living room, you’re in luck. If you want to watch it in the bedroom, backyard, ceiling, or anywhere else, get ready to invest. With a projector, you don’t have to choose just one place to watch your movies: you can watch them .

Before I “invested” (less than $50 for my pick) in a projector, I was a laptop user. This was nice because I could take it anywhere, but it wasn’t suited to more than one or two people at a time.

Now, not only do I have options for the room in which to watch, but also the wall. And, as someone who likes to lie in bed or on the couch, nothing feels more luxurious than getting to display my current show on the ceiling and just let myself be entertained all night long.

Renter Friendly Alternative

As part of the younger generation, I am constantly moving from one apartment to the next. Between two apartments in college, to my novel place in New York, I need to have renter-friendly options for decor that mean I won’t leave my safety deposit behind (along with holes in the wall).

If you’re going to mount anything on the wall it would be a stand or mount for the projector (one to two screws) and a screen on which to display it (two to four screws). Both of these, it’s significant to keep in mind, are optional.

These are a great alternative to the hefty and numerous screws it takes to mount a TV, or the console on which it rests that you weren’t so sure you wanted to buy in the first place.

Affordable Substitute

As I briefly mentioned before, projectors can come pretty economical if all you’re looking for is affordable. But even the most high-end projectors won’t run you more than a few hundred dollars, or maybe a thousand if you’re going for the fanciest novel thing.

You don’t have to worry about a mount (any leveled shelf or even an appropriately high stack of books will do the trick), and a screen is DIY-able, optional, affordable, and easily substituted for a pristine sheet.

Infinite Streaming Options

With a TV, you’re circumscribed to the apps or channels your TV can handle. Or, if you’re a bit more tech-savvy, you might be able to cast your computer or connect it with a series of cables and adaptors.

But projectors are specifically meant to exploit the computer as their main mind, and are infinitely easier to connect to because of this.

This means you can not only stream your shows and movies, but also home movies, random videos, and even just a presentation or images if you’re recapping friends on an extensive vacation.
