For those heading off to college this year, your dorm room is a crucial part of the planning process. Not only is it where you’ll spend most of your time, but it’s the one room (which you’ll have to share), that must serve as your bedroom, office, living room, and kitchen. It’s a lot to ask of a cinderblock square.

So while you’re debating whether or not to loft your bed (I’m very anti-lofted beds, been there, fell twice), consider the type of aesthetic you want for your dorm room. The coastal granddaughter aesthetic is a more youthful take on your classic blue-and-white seaside motifs. With the search for this coastal-inspired aesthetic being up 215 percent, those in this year’s incoming class are definitely ancient souls. Here you’ll find rattan finishes, block-print bedding, and plenty of odes to the Northeastern shorelines. It’s like living in a Nancy Meyers movie.

Being on the Gen Z/Millennial cusp, I’ll admit that I had to Google what a “baddie aesthetic” really was. In case you’re wondering too, think neon signs, inflatable furniture, Y2K, and all things online it-girl (having a Stanley cup is absolutely necessary). According to Pinterest, this trend is on a meteoric rise with searches for ideas rising 775 percent since this time last year.
